Safety of Women & Girls in Natural Disasters
Uttarakhand and Bhuj disaster relief.
In the aftermath of natural disasters, women and girls are often at high risk of violence due to structural inequalities. They may not have access to secure shelters and basic resources, and the social networks that protect women have often been weakened or destroyed.
GMSP funded the reconstruction of forty houses in Bhuj following the earthquake that devastated Gujarat in 2001.
Following floods in Uttarakhand in northern India in 2013, GMSP supported the construction of community buildings and safe spaces for women. A cash payment of 25,000Rs (£250) was also given to all families that had lost a loved one.
